See how things are progressing with the green build house. Some solid work this summer has seen the ground slab installed, retaining walls constructed, lower level walls built, waterproof tanking done, drainage underway and the ‘beam and block’ upper floor installed. Some backfilling will be done soon which will show the partly ‘sunken’ nature of the building.

The walls are constructed from insulated concrete formwork (IFC) which gives a vary good level of insulation and which has also helped to form the retaining structure.

The waterproof tanking is stuck to the outside of the IFC and protected with a water draining membrane.

This project will provide an energy saving home on a pocket sized site. This existing garage will be demolished and replaced with a two bedroomed house. It will include external walls formed using insulated formwork, electricity generating roof panels, air source heat pump for heating and triple glazing. The house will be no bigger visbly than the existing building but will gain space by digging into the ground slope. What about this for a view!

Car Free

Car Free

No one can doubt the success of the Tour in Yorkshire. It showed a real outburst of creativity throughout the County. The race and the entourage were spectacular of course, but afterwards there was a lovely hour or two when we had no cars, and peaple could reclaim the road in our local town. What a pleasure!

20 Year Re-visit

20 Year Re-visit

Nearly 20 years ago we designed an extension for this house. Its unusual to extend on the front of a house because of the normal limitations of Planning policy. It worked out very well in this case and we were able to leave the rear garden unimpeded. You can see the transition here from existing house, to a design drawing, under construction, completion and the same house 20 years on. The owners are now contemplating some further works. . . .

Garage to Garden View

Garage to Garden View

Not so long ago this was a garage. The kitchen faced onto the side wall of a carport and things were generally looking a bit dismal. The garage is now a beautifully light kitchen with a view onto the garden. The roof lantern gives a window to the changing sky and is great for star watching!

Transformation

Transformation

This house is in a great location, but it had it’s problems. Building a new garage gave the owners an opportunity to solve these problems and create a very smart enlarged terrace, as well as a facelift.

Strong Bond

Strong Bond

This little bit of stranded brickwork on Whitehaven beach reminded me of lectures in college days, when we were taught about matching the strength of mortar to the units it was holding together. Nature proves the point I think . . .

One of the beautiful and interesting landscapes I have used for the website. All the landscapes are images of Bronte Moor, close to my home and work.
